Giving an intern a gift shows appreciation and trust. Had you thought about giving a gift on the first day of work? The intern will feel appreciated and you send the message that he or she is welcome.

Finding an original gift is not always easy. Soon we fall into the classics that quickly end up in a corner. We compiled a list of original gifts that are guaranteed to stick.

Are you ready to make your interns' first day at work unforgettable? Then be sure to read on!

The first question you should ask yourself when thinking of a gift is what values or message you want to convey. Then try to translate this into a gift that fits within your culture and the company's values. We'll help you get started:

Get inspired with these 12 ideas for welcome gifts:

1. Relevant book

Learning is key! Surely the point of offering an internship is that you want the intern to have learned a lot at the end. That they have been introduced to the business world and feel ready for the job market. At least, that's how Kevin - the founder of JustBite - sees it.

As part of that, our interns were given a book that aligns with the assignments they will be doing. We currently have 3 interns on board who want to learn more about digital marketing.

We gifted them The Online Marketing Tornado - The Blueprint for a Sparkling Online Business.

2. Healthy snacks

In our case ... a no-brainer, but have you thought about gifting yourself a box full of healthy snacks? Healthy snacks help maintain energy levels and concentration. The snacks are carefully selected based on composition and are also super tasty (win-win).

3. Valuable training

Invest in the process of allowing interns to continuously learn. By doing so, you not only donate something to the intern, but you will reap the benefits as a company.

With us, each intern was given access to the entire Internet Marketing Union - Academy.

Think about the content of the internship and the goals the intern wants to achieve and then put forward an appropriate course.

4. A fitness subscription or subscription in a gym

Under the motto "a healthy mind in a healthy body". If as an employer you pay attention to the well-being of your employees, this will lead to better performance and higher productivity.

Is the intern(s) doing a 4-month internship? Give them a 4-month fitness or sports membership at a nearby sports club.

5. Extended breakfast

Imagine ... it's your first day at work. With great excitement you arrive at the company where you will be doing your internship. You are welcomed by your internship supervisor, given a tour and introduced to the colleagues. Then you will be assigned a desk, a desk full of goodies to start the day.... 😍

Find a local merchant who can provide you with these.

6. A headset or earphones.

A must for weekly meetings or conference calls.

7. Drink bottle

A reusable water bottle is a real must-have in the office. Moreover, it is good for the environment. A trendy water bottle encourages to drink water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Drinking enough water boosts the metabolism and ensures better concentration and improved short-term memory.

8. Powerbank

"Battery low." Everyone recognizes this phrase. Nothing as annoying as that... No one likes to have a dead battery, so this gift will be used anyway. Powerbanks are becoming more elaborate and include more options. Try to get creative with this as well and add your own "branded touch" to this.

9. Branded T-shirt/sweater

Give a personalized sweater with your company name/logo on it to make the intern feel welcome in the team. Your employees, as well as your interns, are ambassadors of your company. In companies like Google, for example, employees walk around wearing branded jerseys because they are proud to work for their employer.

10. Internship survival kit

Put together a survival kit to help the intern survive their first day. You can put together this kit yourself as you choose, for example by adding office supplies such as pens (printed with company logo), post-its, notebooks, as well as mints, lip balm, among others.... It's fun to add handwritten post-its with a matching appropriate text.
Adding a personal touch to your gift makes employees feel more appreciated.

11. Bluetooth speakers

Bluetooth speakers are easy to take anywhere and you can connect them to different devices. Sing along loudly with music in the shower, have a yoga session before bed....

12. VR glasses

Would you like to brand yourself as an innovative and creative internship company? Then VR glasses are an ideal gift. Let your intern(s) work from a tropical island or prefer a closed work environment? It's all possible, with the app Breakroom you can completely determine your workplace. But of course, the bow can't always be tight. The VR glasses also offer numerous applications to relax: sports, gaming....

So! We hope to have inspired you with fun and innovative gift ideas that will make your interns truly welcome! Which one is your favorite? We look forward to hearing about them in the comments below.

Good luck!

Sofie van der Ha

Sofie (25) is a postgraduate Digital Marketing Communication student at the Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent. We will immerse her in the wonderful world of online ads, Search Engine Optimization, Conversion Rate Optimization, content marketing... and so much more!

  • What does your ideal break time look like? 10 minutes of abdominal exercises
  • What is your favorite snack? As a snack I like to eat blueberries, I can really enjoy these.
  • Why did you choose JustBite for your internship? For one thing, the varied range of tasks appealed to me, no two days are the same! Also, a start-up seemed like an exciting environment for me to end up in to gain as much experience as possible in different areas. On the other hand, I am also interested in healthy food and like to experiment in the kitchen to try new dishes and snacks.

Femke De Keyser

Femke (21) is a marketing student at the Arteveldehogeschool in Ghent. Besides her studies and accompanying internship, she decided to look for a student job that complements her education. Femke offers support in the field of digital marketing, with a focus on content creation.

  • What does your ideal break look like? Getting fashion inspiration! Flipping through my favorite magazine or scrolling on Pinterest, I find that really relaxing. Creating something fun with the pieces already in my closet or inspiration for the next shopping spree, that gives me energy!
  • What is your favorite snack? I enjoy eating fruit immensely, preferably mango. If I add yogurt to that, I'm happy for several hours!
  • Why did you choose JustBite for your internship? It's not really an internship for me, I work one day a week as a job student. I already had a student job at Levi's but the concept of JustBite and its healthy snacks, plus the flexibility we get as interns, gave me more than enough reasons to add a second student job! Now I have student jobs that both align with my passions: healthy snacks and fashion!

Naziha Kaddouri

Naziha (19) is a Communication Management student at Howest in Kortrijk. A real jack-of-all-trades, she is happy to be part of JustBite. She will be doing an internship here for 4 weeks and will mainly focus on digital marketing (ads, content creation, social media, email marketing etc.).

  • What does your ideal break moment look like?
My ideal break moment is enjoying some time outdoors together with colleagues. Given the circumstances, I will do this from my dorm 😊
  • What is your favorite snack?
An energy bar with chocolate pieces, because I love chocolate and get my energy from it.
  • Why did you choose Justbite to do your internship?
Healthy eating in the workplace is starting to become more and more of a real trend, so I found it interesting to be a part of such a fledgling trend and a start-up company for a period of time and see how things work behind the scenes. I think it is important for people to know that there are plenty of healthy snacks that are just as tasty or even tastier than those that are full of sugar.
